Keeping Up With The Trends
Article by Stewart Wrighter
Trends in fashion change as quickly as they come. By the time one finds out what the new trend may be a new one might have already come about. Fashion can range from things as small as fashionable handmade jewelry and handcrafted jewelry to crazy outfits only people such as lady gaga can “pull off”. The fashion industry is a billion dollar industry. Some people live their life striving to be as fashionable as humanly possible. Having said this however, some people are completely oblivious to the always changing fashion industry. This extreme industry creates millions of jobs around the world.
Although most people jump to the conclusion that the industry is all about the looks and style of the outfits, that is not always the case. It may be all about style in the mainstream runway industry, but when you dig deeper you see that is about providing clothing for every man’s budget. Fashion is definitely about the appearance and style for the most part, but there is another side to the industry that people tend to overlook. It is a well-known generalization that most blue-collar citizens have less interest in fashion than the wealthy and elite have.
In addition to one’s wealth playing a part in the dislike or like of the industry, location is also a big determining factor. For example: someone living in New York City, in the heart of the fashion industry, might have more of an inclination to be involved than someone living in a rural area where the influence of fashion might not be as strong. Another thing is that some people believe that modern fashion is overrated. Some people may think that their fashion is what’s modern. There are so many different kinds of fashion as well. There is runway fashion, which not many people actually wear because of the cost as well as the originality of the outfit. To deal with problems such as these many people make outfits similar to those on the runway, “knock-offs”.
It is common culture in the twenty-first century to aspire to dress similar to and resemble celebrities. Even though this is true it is also common culture to be unique, or to associate with a counterculture. Since so many people have started in on this trend to resist culture and trends they have created their own subculture. This subculture almost defeats the purpose of the intended goal. In the process of trying to be different and not associate with a certain culture they have created one.
Fashion is not only about labels and style it is also about one’s sense of individuality. It is a widely accepted way of expressing oneself. Fashion can be a sense of much-needed relief to anyone that may not have another way of showing who they really are and what they are about. It gives people a sense of freedom and expression that really cannot be expressed in any other way. Giving people this chance is amazing and unlike any other opportunity people have.
